've mentioned before that I have health issues that can be somewhat restrictive for me. Since I've recently added a donation goal for an Adjustable Standing Desk to my Twitch Overlay, I'd like to delve into one particular problem that I have, so that perhaps people can get a slightly better idea as to why this donation goal has been set.
I have sciatica. For those that aren't aware what this is, count yourselves lucky, it's unpleasant. Essentially, it's a 'catch all' term for 'pinched nerve somewhere in your lower back that effects your legs'. That pinched nerve can be pretty much anywhere and, while it can be treated by a chiropractor, there's a possibility that it's never going to go away altogether, and that you may even require invasive surgery on your SPINE to fix it.
What does sciatica mean to me? The pinched or compressed nerve is somewhere near my tailbone. Due to the placement, it makes sitting down for long periods of time somewhat challenging, which is mildly ironic because I work at a computer all day, so it makes it hard to concentrate and get much work done, or stream for that matter. The compression causes my legs to 'tingle'. Not quite like the 'pins and needles' of a limb falling asleep, more like everything's alive and vibrating at an incredibly distracting rate. This vibration can radiate up both legs to my hips, groin, and even my lower abdomen (stomach area). Sometimes the 'buzzing' vibration feeling becomes so bad that it feels like hundreds of bees are buzzing around inside my skin, or that a swarm of ants is crawling up my legs. It's incredibly unpleasant. Other times, the feeling can shift from simple vibration to genuine pain and pressure in my thighs that can give me pause or even bring me to tears. I wish I could explain it better but the best example I can give is - Sit down then make a fist with your hands and push your knuckles into the tops of your thighs, twist your hands so it digs your knuckles into the muscle there (not too long otherwise you can hurt yourself). Now imagine that feeling coming out of absolutely nowhere and nothing you can do makes it go away, no amount of stretching or moving, no heating pads or ice packs.. It'll just go away on its own with no explanation, rhyme, or reason. Yeah... it's not fun.
My sciatica CAN be treated by a chiropractor and it does help when I sit on a special cushion specifically for people who suffer from sciatica. Standing and walking around help relieve the pressure and even encourage the compression to lessen or even go away for a length of time. It CAN go away for a while once I've undergone a few rounds of 'decompression' or I've managed to relieve the pressure enough on my own somehow (by standing more than sitting, primarily), and while that's wonderful... small things can cause it to come back very easily. Recently, I suffered a small strain to one of my legs and was lying in bed with my legs propped up, I shifted my hips to adjust my placement and my lower back erupted in a brief but shocking agony. After that, my legs began to tingle again, then 'vibrate'... then 'buzz'... and I've begun to encounter moments of pain again, over the last few days... So I've decided to try to save up for an Adjustable Standing Desk.. and I'm asking for your help.
Why an adjustable desk? Why not an ikea hack? Sadly, there are no affordable ikea hacks for easily maneuverable adjustable standing desks. Believe me, I've looked EVERYWHERE. I can't find anything. So, I found a desk that would work best for me and I've made it my goal to save up for it.
Why an ADJUSTABLE desk? Due to this, and other health issues, I need something that I can bring to a standing position with relative ease and then set back down into a position where I can use a normal chair again. A stool, or other raised seat, would do little more than put me at further risk of injury, plus the position I would be in while perched on a stool would put even more pressure on my tailbone and simply exacerbate the problem.
I know this isn't anyone else's problem. I know I have no right to ask anyone for help with this. Part of me absolutely hates reaching out and actually asking for help... but I don't bring in enough money to be able to afford this anytime soon. I have bills to pay in real life, medical and otherwise, that are somewhat crippling in and of themselves, and other financial responsibilities that make it practically impossible to actually set enough money aside to even make a dent in the price tag of this thing anytime soon. So I'm doing the only thing I can do at this point and asking for help.
If you're worried that I'm scamming people and going to blow the money on beer and hookers, guess what? I stream every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on Twitch, so once it's been purchased and has shown up, I can pretty much guarantee you'll be able to see it in action once it arrives and gets set up. I'll even flip the webcam around so you can see it properly. But I don't blame you for being skeptical, I would be too. So donate, if you feel inclined. If you don't, no hard feelings, I totally understand.
(Couldn't figure out how to embed the ticker since it's not rigged up that way, I apologize)
